La disco music di Gloria Gaynor

Oggi mi andava proprio di fare questo post su Gloria Gaynor. Così eccovi i video delle sue canzoni più famose (con relativi link ai testi) e qualche notizia sulla cantante da Wikipedia.

Gloria Gaynor (Newark, 7 settembre 1949) è una cantante statunitense. Il suo vero nome è Gloria Fowles.

Esponente di spicco della disco music è nota particolarmente per la famosa I Will Survive e per una cover di Never Can Say Goodbye.

Gloria Gaynor iniziò nei Soul Satisfiers una band jazz/pop negli anni sessanta. Il suo primo singolo fu "She'll Be Sorry / Let Me Go Baby" (1965).

Con la cover di Never Can Say Goodbye, pubblicata nel 1974 e successivamente inclusa all'interno dell'omonimo album del 1975, Gloria Gaynor ottenne un primo grande successo, entrando nella top ten della classifica statunitense: la canzone fu tra le prime ad avviare il fenomeno della disco music, che sarebbe esploso in tutto il mondo a partire dal 1977. Alcune canzoni meno famose in Italia sono Honey Bee (1974) e Casanova Brown (1975), mentre molto nota è anche la cover di Reach Out, I'll Be There, dei The Four Tops.

Nel 1978 esce l'album "I Have a Right", da cui fu estratto il singolo che l'avrebbe resa celebre in mezzo mondo: I Will Survive racconta di una donna, lasciata di recente, che dichiara al suo ex-fidanzato di non aver più bisogno del suo aiuto e che se la sarebbe cavata benissimo da sola. La canzone conobbe un successo strepitoso e, tuttora, è, non di rado, mandata in onda, anche in discoteca o in eventi particolari. Al tempo fu eretta a simbolo dell'emancipazione femminile mentre oggi è l'inno ufficioso della comunità gay.

Curiosamente, la casa discografica aveva pubblicato il 45giri con la nota canzone incisa sul lato B, a favore della semisconosciuta Substitute, considerata "più orecchiabile". I DJ, tuttavia, intesero presto il potenziale della canzone e presto l'etichetta si trovò costretta a incidere le copie successive con i lati invertiti. Non a caso, il singolo raggiunse la vetta della classifica stilata da Billboard già dalla prima settimana. Nonostante i 25 anni dall'uscita del singolo che la rese popolarissima, Gloria Gaynor è ancora subissata di richieste di partecipazioni a spettacoli per esibirsi in "I Will Survive".

Il declino della musica disco segnò profondamente la carriera della Gaynor, che conobbe, da allora, sempre meno fama, se si esclude l'estemporanea popolarità avuta nel 1983 con I Am What I Am (1983).

A metà degli anni novanta la cantante decise di dedicarsi alla recitazione e comparve, tra le altre cose, nelle fiction The Wayans Bros, That 70's Show e Ally McBeal prima di esordire in uno spettacolo di Broadway chiamato Smokey Joe's Cafe.

In tempi recenti si è riavvicinata agli studi di registrazione e nel 2002 pubblicò il suo primo disco dopo oltre vent'anni I Wish You Love. Entrambi i singoli estratti dall'album, Just Keep Thinking About You e I Never Knew, scalarono le classifiche dance fino al primo posto. Il 19 settembre 2005 Gloria è stata ammessa nella Dance Music Hall of Fame, sia come cantante che per il singolo I Will Survive.
